Text Evidence:Then he lighted the fire and held the plain inside surface of the envelope to the flame. In a few minutes faint characters began to appear.

Summary: an orphan Violet Marsh was left her uncle's will. Now she's trying to outwit a dead man. Using her book smarts against his common sense she hires a detective to play the game for her. Resulting in her coming out on top.

Characters: Captain Hastings, Hercule Poirot, Miss Violet Marsh, Uncle Andrew, and Mr. and Mrs.Baker

Conflict: Character v.s. Character-trying to find where the uncle had hidden the will.

Figurative Language: Metaphor-comparing the uncle's wits to niece's

Theme: Ambition and deception. Mama tricked Mrs.Beauchamp by bartering a man who could do Mrs.Beauchamp's house work for free.

Summary: When papa falls ill and needs help from a specialist mama doesn't have the money. With some clever thinking mama gets the help mama needs.

Summary:  Every year Grandpa welcomes spring, and every year he welcomes his "old friend". Now Grandpa has his curious grandson wondering about this friend only to find out it's a terrapin.

Setting: An old farm around 1942.

Conflict: Grandpa's old age is starting to get to him.
